I Saved a LOT of Money! (07.23.1999)

Men and women look at the fruits of a shopping trip totally differently.

When I get home from the store, my husband asks, “How much did it cost?”

“I saved $10.00” is my reply.

“But how much did you pay?” he insists.

“It was originally $30.00 but I got it for 33% off!” I explain.

“So you paid $20.00.  Thank you.”

Yep, men want to know the bottom line; we women want them to know how well we’ve done.  We don’t care how much we spent, but how much we SAVED.

Recently, a local store had a “secret” sale.  That meant that it wasn’t advertised, but somehow everyone in town found out about it anyway.  Everything in the store was 20% off from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday night, including the stuff that was already on sale!

Women love a sale.  But a “sale on a sale” is pure heaven!  Women go into a frenzy if it’s a SECRET “sale on a sale”.  It turns into bedlam if it’s for one night only.  It calls us and we are drawn to it.

The kids and I braved the crowds and entered the store.  We had already scoped out the stuff we wanted, so it didn’t take long to gather.  But then we waited in line.  And waited.  And waited.  And waited.

When moms are waiting in lines, kids try on more clothes.  And shoes.  And caps.  The longer I waited in line, the more I spent, er, I mean saved.

I sure saved a LOT of money that night.

About Sarah Higgins

Sarah wrote the column "Life's Funny!" for the Bay City Tribune (Bay City, Texas) from 1998 to 2003. The columns, primarily based on her hectic household full of four children, pets, and constant crises, are posted on this site. In 2014, she was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), in her sinus cavity. ACC is a wicked type of cancer with poor survivability rates. She underwent the resection of the tumor, part of her eye socket, her cheek bone, facial tissue, and half her nose, followed by 6 weeks of grueling radiation and 15 reconstructive surgeries. In 2021, her surgeon told her, "Well, I think you've beat this thing!" Posts about the early surgeries are also posted on this site by Sarah's son, Donnie. Today, she lives in her Montana log home just north of Yellowstone National Park with her dog, Charlie.
